IF PRODUCTS ARE FLAT, like electrical outlet wall plates and switch plates,
or disposable medical devices, or lottery ticket booklets, or condoms, or
scalpel blades, or even plastic knives and forks, they are packaged on a
horizontal machine.
Wrapade builds two
versions: One is a unitized machine with a full-length frame supporting the
sealing head and the infeed conveyor, both of which are driven by a single
motor via conventional gears and sprockets. This is the kind of rugged,
straightforward, time-tested machine that packages the same product, day
after day, year after year, just about forever. We build this type of machine
for items such as scalpel blades and condoms, which don’t change hardly at
all in size, shape, or package design.

For situations where the
product mix requires periodic changeovers, our modular-design machine is more
appropriate. In this one, the sealing head and infeed conveyor are driven
separately, although they can be structurally joined together if desired.

The sealing head is driven by one constant-speed DC motor and two separate
servo motors. The DC motor drives the side sealers and puller wheels, while
the servo motors drive the cross sealer and the cutoff knife. Thus the
package length can be changed simply by programming the speed of the servo
motors to move the position of the cross seal and cutoff along the length of
the package. The infeed conveyor is also servo driven, to synchronize the
product feed with the package length.

OPTIONS. Both types of machine can be fitted with accessory items as
required. The condom packaging machine (pictured at left) is equipped with a
pump system to apply lubricant to each condom prior to packaging. The machine
shown above has a device that feeds product from a reel, cuts it into narrow
strips, and places the strips on the infeed conveyor. Screws can be added to
wallplates, salt and pepper packs can be included with cutlery, and leaflets
can be packaged with medical items. And, of course, packages can be printed,
hot stamped, embossed, coded, tear-notched, and hole-punched. Missing
product, film splices, or other faults can be detected, and the offending
packages automatically rejected.
